A New Favorite
It’s nothing special but it is now among my favorite photos.
The fire alarm was insignificant. An overheated ballast for an. old lighting system in a building on East College in Uptown. Because of the building’s age and location, fire department protocol calls for a heavier response than most locations.
Ladder 111 is one of the fire apparatus that arrives quickly from the main fire station on West Main Street.
Most of the time it sat on the street as firefighters investigated the alarm it was in the shade of a shifting cloud cover. The sun appeared just as it began to leave the scene, its rear wheels turned to match the front, as it should be.
Adding the row of colorful older houses in Uptown to the mixture moved the photo from a snapshot to something that is storytelling in a very simple way. Maybe that’s why I like it so much.
