I will be discussing “Accidental History: Photographs of Westerville”, a collection of my photos at the Westerville History Museum in the Westerville Library Friday, January 23, 2023.

The Photos
It is said you shouldn’t choose favorites among your children but this is my favorite photo from the exhibit. It is from a trunk or treat event at Westerville Community Church where younger children get their treats without having to walk around the neighborhood knocking on strangers’ doors on Halloween night.
I’d hoped to get a photo for My Final Photo from the gathering but it wasn’t very photogenic. The arrival of kids was scattered and most had very traditional costumes that didn't meet my daily requirements for “something new, different, or better.”
Didn’t stay very long. I didn’t know many people giving out candy and even fewer families with costumed kids. It’s a kid thing.
Another rule is “Don’t linger.” Find the photo as quickly as you can and move on. If there is little chance that the event might evolve into a good photo get out of the way until it happens. It wasn’t happening. I left.
Almost as soon as I turned to walk to my car I saw this.
Shot it with my iPhone using the telephoto lens. Intentionally cropped out mom’s torso. She’s important and a great anchor for composition. Also didn’t want the extraneous sky as a background. These are the natural expressions of the kids. They did their own posing and action.
