Pulled this from the archive today as I was looking for a different photo for someone. It’s another one of those photos that always holds my interest for the odd juxtaposition of mechanical and eternal with the tombstone inscribed with “GROSS” and the vault ready for use at the end of the burial rite.
The composition seems rich in symbolism. The mechanical vault trailer, a harbinger of closure, and the solitary tombstone in the foreground carry with them connotations of the magnitude of loss experienced by those who mourn.
This scene might resonate emotionally with some people as it speaks to the universal human experience of saying goodbye. It reminds us of the practical aspects that accompany even our most profound moments, grounding the spiritual with the physical.
Made the photo while waiting for a funeral to begin.
It also might irritate others as a calloused view of a solemn ceremony, grave humor at its worst.
Reminds me of another gravestone photo I wrote about.
