I’m usually not enamored with this type of photo as My Final Photo. Posing is not one of my favorite moments, and I always stand off to the side of the subjects. I ask them to ignore me and concentrate on the primary photographer. That gives me a more authentic view of the moment and possibly a better photo than anticipated.
That’s what happened with this photo from several weeks ago at Family Room Coffee and Bake Shop, which hosted Coffee with Cops.
I’d made several other photos showing residents interacting with police officers, but none seemed to work for me. The composition was off, the action wasn’t dynamic, and the background was distracting.
When the staff of the Family Room asked for a group photo at the end of the morning, I stepped to the side and immediately moved into position to include Chloe, the police therapy dog, into the edge of the frame.
Chloe rewarded me with an expression noting her calm demeanor and purpose. Despite being a posed photo, Chloe made the day with her attitude.
