Took time away from Saturday’s Ohio News Photographers Association annual conference to make photos at the “Hands Off” protest in Uptown. Carried two cameras and two lenses, a 24-70mm and a 70-180mm.
The difficulty in making photos at this large-scale event, mainly when it covers a large area, is finding a single photograph that best tells the story. The photo below is that photo. Made with the telephoto, it compresses the crowd gathered at the corner of South State and Winter Street against the Uptown architecture, which sets the scene.
Finding a moment when the individual elements work together is key to making this photograph effective. The flag must be unfurled, and the signs should all be facing my direction and unobstructed. No one should be looking at me. The video at the bottom of this post shows all the photos I made of this scene and others that resulted in the following photo gallery.
The gallery was first published today in The Westerville News.
The video below shows all the photos I made at the protest. It shows my shooting process, with many failures and a few successes. It is for paid subscribers only.
